Energy in Zapata is deregulated. As an energy consumer, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you insight and command over your energy bill.

Deregulation of electricity in the state de-monopolized the electricity market for most of the state, the city of Zapata included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many fantastic power providers compete for your business in Zapata by offering low prices, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save money on your power statement.

As many as 65+ retail electricity providers compete for your account in Zapata, with hundreds of plans.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Zapata

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Understanding the monthly energy consumption is ideal for shopping for power in Zapata. Why is this important?

The “price per kWh” you see electricity companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much electricity you consume each month.

Unless you use precisely the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to shop for an energy provider.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing rates by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to find the ideal electricity plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now solved in just moments.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the best electricity rate plan for your home’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then help you order your plan with your chosen energy provider without ever having to leave our service.

The takeaway here is you must determine your expected or historical usage before picking the best electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average energy in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Zapata: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Zapata, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. The tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption by simply entering your zip code.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when renewing your existing plan or switching.

Switching Electricity Companies in Zapata

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so shopping for a lower rate yearly when your contract expires is essential.

Your existing electricity provider will generally raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you fail to act, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new energy company will handle everything, including terminating service with your previous provider.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Zapata is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an “early cancellation” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and want to find the best plan, remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the lowest rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Zapata Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Zapata was founded in 1770 as a Spanish colonial settlement and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in Texas. The town was originally located along the Rio Grande but was relocated in the 1950s when the construction of Falcon Dam created Falcon Lake, submerging the original townsite under water. The entire community had to be moved to higher ground, making it one of the few Texas towns that literally picked up and moved to a new location.

RECENT

In 2019, Zapata gained national attention when it became a focal point in the border security debate, with the town serving as a key location for discussions about border wall construction along the Rio Grande. The town has also experienced significant growth in recent years due to increased oil and gas activity in the Eagle Ford Shale formation, bringing new economic opportunities to this historically agricultural community.

OTHER

FAMOUS PEOPLE/EVENTS: Zapata is named after Colonel José Antonio Zapata, a Mexican revolutionary who fought against the Republic of Texas in the 1840s. The town also gained fame as a filming location for several movies, including parts of the 1952 film 'Viva Zapata!' starring Marlon Brando. The irony that a Texas town named after a Mexican revolutionary who fought against Texas independence was used to film a movie about another Mexican revolutionary named Zapata has not been lost on historians.

DID YOU KNOW

Zapata sits on the shores of Falcon Lake, which is technically an international lake shared between the United States and Mexico, with the border running right through the middle of the water. This creates the unusual situation where you can literally fish in two countries at the same time without leaving your boat. The lake is also home to a submerged ghost town - the original Zapata - whose buildings occasionally become visible during periods of extreme drought when water levels drop significantly.

OTHER

CULTURAL/UNIQUE: Zapata is famous for hosting one of Texas's most unique festivals, the annual Zapata County Fair and Livestock Show, which features traditional Mexican charreada (rodeo) events alongside typical Texas rodeo competitions. The town maintains strong cultural ties to both sides of the border, with many families having relatives in both countries. Zapata is also known as the 'Bass Capital of Texas' due to Falcon Lake's reputation for producing trophy-sized largemouth bass, attracting anglers from across the nation to this small border community.
