Who delivers electricity in Troy

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Troy. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Troy electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Troy’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Troy addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Troy today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

As a resident or business owner within Troy, you can choose the electricity provider that best meets your needs.

Compare Power is a free consumer service established in 2009 to assist residents of Troy in shopping for their lowest-rate energy plan.

These official rates are the same prices you’ll find by contacting the electricity companies or visiting their websites.

This assures Texas energy customers avoid hidden markups and advertising gimmicks by comparing plans “apples-to-apples” without spending hours calling different energy providers or clicking through dozens of websites.

Energy in Troy is deregulated. As an energy customer, you have a choice when picking a retail electricity provider (your electricity company), which gives you flexibility and power over your energy bills.

Deregulation of energy in the state de-monopolized the energy market for most of Texas, the city of Troy included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent power companies compete for your business in Troy by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save money on your energy statement.

As many as 100+ retail electricity providers compete for your account in Troy, and hundreds of plans exist to sort through.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Troy

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Knowing how much energy you will consume month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on energy in Troy. Why is this important?

The rate electricity providers advertise for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much energy you use in a month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will pay an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to pick your electricity rate.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing options by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your household.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the right energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What could take hours inside a spreadsheet is solved in a few seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the electricity plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then help you enroll with your selected power provider without ever leaving our service.

The bottom line is you should determine your expected or historical usage before ordering the best electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage or own a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Troy: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Troy, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: You can estimate your monthly usage if you can’t obtain a usage history. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in Troy

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing energy provider will typically raise your energy rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing electricity providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity company will handle everything, including canceling service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Troy is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early from your current contract’s end date without an “early termination” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the best price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Troy Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Troy was founded in 1881 when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built through the area, originally named after the ancient city of Troy. The town was established as a farming community in the fertile Blackland Prairie region of Central Texas, serving as a shipping point for cotton and grain produced by German and Czech immigrants who settled the area in the late 1800s.

RECENT

In 2020, Troy completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Main Street and added new sidewalks and period lighting. The project was funded through a combination of state grants and local fundraising efforts, bringing new businesses and renewed pride to the small community's historic core.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Troy was the childhood home of country music songwriter Red Lane, who wrote numerous hit songs for Merle Haggard including 'The Fugitive' and 'If We Make It Through December.' Lane grew up on a farm outside Troy in the 1940s and often credited his small-town Texas upbringing for inspiring his authentic country music lyrics that resonated with working-class Americans.

DID YOU KNOW

Troy is home to one of the last remaining original Katy Railroad depots in Central Texas, built in 1902 and still standing on Main Street. The depot served as the town's lifeline to the outside world for decades, and during World War II, it was a crucial stop for troop trains carrying soldiers from nearby Fort Hood to deployment ports on the Gulf Coast.

CULTURAL

Every October, Troy hosts the annual Troy Cotton Festival, celebrating the town's agricultural heritage with a parade featuring antique tractors, cotton picking demonstrations, and a contest for the best homemade cornbread. The festival draws visitors from across Bell County and features live bluegrass music, local craft vendors, and traditional Texas barbecue prepared by volunteer fire department members.
