You have the power to choose your home’s energy company in Smiley.

Compare Power is a free consumer service established in 2009 to help residents of Smiley shop for their lowest-rate electricity plan.

Plan information is presented in a user-friendly format that enables a quick and simple comparison of available plans and options.

Energy in Smiley is deregulated. As a resident, you have a choice when selecting a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you control and power over your energy bills.

Deregulation of energy in the state de-monopolized the electricity market for most of the state, the city of Smiley included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent power companies compete for your business in Smiley by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save costs on your electricity bill.

As many as 100+ energy companies compete for your account in Smiley, and hundreds of plans exist to select from.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Smiley

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Determining the amount of energy you will consume in a month is the ideal way to find a deal on electricity in Smiley. Why is this important?

Power companies advertise the “price per kWh” for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much energy you use in the month.

Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will pay a “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to choose your power rate.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Better still, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter and is the ideal way to determine the perfect energy rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now solved in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and assisting you step-by-step with the energy rate plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then help you sign up with your selected electricity provider without ever leaving our service.

The takeaway is that you should know your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Smiley: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Smiley, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching Electricity Companies in Smiley

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract expires.

Your existing electricity company will typically raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Smiley is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your contract ends without an “early termination” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee of breaking your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the lowest rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Smiley Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Smiley was founded in 1887 as a railroad town along the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway line. The town was named after a railroad official, and its establishment was part of the great Texas railroad expansion that connected rural communities to major markets, transforming the agricultural economy of South Central Texas.

RECENT

In 2020, Smiley completed a major infrastructure improvement project that upgraded its water distribution system and installed new digital water meters throughout the community. This $2.3 million project, funded through state grants and local bonds, modernized the town's aging water infrastructure that had been in place since the 1950s.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter and performer Gary P. Nunn, famous for writing 'London Homesick Blues' (the theme song for Austin City Limits), spent part of his childhood in the Smiley area. His song became one of the most recognizable anthems of Texas music, with the famous line 'I wanna go home with the armadillo' becoming synonymous with Texas culture.

DID YOU KNOW

Smiley holds the distinction of being one of the smallest incorporated towns in Texas to have its own post office continuously operating since 1887. The original post office building, which still stands on Main Street, was constructed entirely from locally quarried limestone and has survived multiple hurricanes, floods, and even a small tornado in 1965 without major structural damage.

CULTURAL

Every October, Smiley hosts the annual 'Smiley Days' festival, which features a unique tradition called the 'Backwards Parade' where all floats and participants move in reverse down Main Street. This quirky tradition started in 1962 when the parade marshal accidentally led the procession the wrong way, and the community loved it so much they made it a permanent feature that draws visitors from across South Texas.
