Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

San Diego, Texas was founded in 1876 and named after Santiago Vidaurri, a Mexican rancher who owned vast lands in the area during the mid-1800s. The town served as a crucial stop along the Texas Mexican Railway, which connected Laredo to Corpus Christi, making it an important shipping point for cattle and agricultural products from South Texas ranches.

RECENT

In 2019, San Diego completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Gravis Street, the main thoroughfare. The $2.3 million project included new sidewalks, period-appropriate street lighting, and facade improvements that have attracted new businesses and increased tourism to this small South Texas community.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

San Diego is the birthplace of Jovita Idar, a pioneering Mexican-American journalist and civil rights activist born here in 1885. She founded the feminist newspaper 'La Mujer Moderna' and was instrumental in organizing the First Mexican Congress in 1911, fighting for education rights and women's suffrage throughout South Texas.

DID YOU KNOW

San Diego, Texas is home to one of the oldest continuously operating general stores in South Texas, Bernardo's Mercantile, which has been serving the community since 1883. The store still uses its original wooden floors and tin ceiling, and locals claim you can still buy everything from horse tack to homemade tamales under the same roof where cowboys shopped over 140 years ago.

CULTURAL

Every September, San Diego hosts the annual Pachanga Festival, a three-day celebration that combines traditional Mexican folk dancing with modern Tejano music and attracts over 10,000 visitors to this town of fewer than 5,000 residents. The festival features authentic pit-barbacoa cooked in underground ovens, a tradition that dates back to the area's original Mexican settlers and has been passed down through generations of local families.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in San Diego

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Knowing the amount of electricity you will consume monthly is the best way to shop for power in San Diego. Why does this matter?

The “price per kWh” you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much energy you consume in a month.

Unless you use precisely the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for a power plan.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the right electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then help you order your plan with your chosen electricity company without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you should determine your expected or historical usage before choosing the best electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to San Diego: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up an electricity service in San Diego, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home to get the best rate.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: You can estimate your monthly usage if you can’t obtain a usage history. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in San Diego

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so it is vital to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing electricity provider will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing electricity providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you decide to switch, your new electricity provider will take care of everything for you, including canceling service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in San Diego is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an “early cancellation” fee. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.
