Who delivers electricity in Ranger

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Ranger. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Ranger electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Ranger’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Ranger addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Ranger today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Ranger, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

You have the power to choose your household’s energy company in Ranger.

Compare Power is a free consumer service started in 2009 to assist residents of Ranger shopping for their lowest-rate electricity plan.

These official rates are the same prices you’ll find calling the electricity companies or visiting them online.

Plans from several different energy companies are presented in a convenient grid, making evaluating alternatives simple and quick.

This helps Texas energy customers avoid hidden fees and advertising gimmicks by comparing “apples-to-apples” plans without wasting hours and hours making phone calls or sorting through dozens of websites.

Electricity in Ranger, Texas, has been deregulated. As an energy consumer, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your electricity provider), which gives you control and power over your energy bills.

Deregulation of energy in Texas de-monopolized the energy market for most of Texas, the city of Ranger included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many fantastic power providers compete for your business in Ranger by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save costs on your energy bill.

As many as 65+ retail electricity providers compete for your business in Ranger, with hundreds of plans to sort through.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Ranger

#1 rule: Usage is king!

Discovering how much electricity you will consume month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on power in Ranger. Why should you care?

The rate you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much energy you consume in the month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will pay a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for a power rate.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your household.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to discover the perfect energy rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in a few seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then help you order your plan with your selected energy provider without leaving our website.

The takeaway here is you must know your expected or historical usage before picking the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage or own a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an electricity provider at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Ranger: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up an electricity service in Ranger, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home to get the best rate.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in Ranger

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate each year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing electricity provider will typically raise your energy rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to contact your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity company will handle everything, including canceling service with your previous provider.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Ranger is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your contract ends without an “early cancellation” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching providers may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the best rate.

You will want to find your past usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Ranger Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Ranger was founded in 1882 as a railroad town along the Texas and Pacific Railway, but it truly exploded during the 1917 oil boom when the McCleskey No. 1 well came in just outside town. The discovery transformed Ranger from a sleepy farming community of 1,000 people into a wild boomtown of over 30,000 residents almost overnight, earning it the nickname 'The World's Greatest Boomtown.'

RECENT

In 2017, Ranger celebrated the 100th anniversary of its famous oil discovery with a year-long centennial celebration that included historical reenactments and the restoration of several downtown buildings. The city has also recently completed a downtown revitalization project that restored many of the historic buildings from the oil boom era, creating a charming historic district that attracts visitors interested in Texas oil history.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Ranger is the birthplace of Nolan Ryan, the Hall of Fame pitcher who holds the all-time record for strikeouts and no-hitters in Major League Baseball. Ryan was born here in 1947 and went on to play for 27 seasons with teams including the New York Mets, California Angels, Houston Astros, and Texas Rangers, becoming one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball history.

DID YOU KNOW

During Ranger's 1917-1920 oil boom, the town was so wild and lawless that the Texas Rangers had to establish a permanent camp here to maintain order among the thousands of oil workers, gamblers, and fortune seekers. The irony wasn't lost on anyone that the Texas Rangers were stationed in a town called Ranger, and locals joked that they finally had 'Rangers in Ranger' to keep the peace during those chaotic boomtown days.

CULTURAL

Ranger is home to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, though this creates confusion since the museum is actually about the law enforcement Texas Rangers, not the town itself. The museum houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Texas Ranger artifacts and memorabilia in the state, including weapons, badges, and historical documents spanning over 180 years of the famous law enforcement agency's history.
