Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Progreso today is 7.0¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Progreso

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Discovering how much energy you will use in a month is the ideal way to find a deal on power in Progreso. Why does this matter?

The rate electricity providers advertise for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different calculation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will change according to how much energy you consume in a month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will pay a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to pick your energy rate.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing rates with the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the right electricity plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in seconds.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step with the energy rate plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then assist you in signing up with your selected electricity provider without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you should determine your expected or historical usage before selecting the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage or own a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Progreso: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Progreso, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: You can estimate your monthly usage if you can’t obtain a usage history. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in Progreso

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is important to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing electricity provider will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you do not act, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous company.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Progreso is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an “early termination” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the lowest rate.

You will want to find your past usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Progreso Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Progreso was founded in 1928 as a planned agricultural community by land developer Lloyd Bentsen Sr., father of future U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen Jr. The town was strategically located along the Rio Grande Valley's fertile farmland and was designed to serve as a shipping point for citrus fruits and vegetables to northern markets via the newly constructed railroad lines.

RECENT

In 2020, Progreso completed a major infrastructure upgrade project that included new water treatment facilities and improved drainage systems to handle the area's frequent flooding issues. The $3.2 million project was funded through a combination of federal grants and state assistance, significantly improving the quality of life for residents in this border community.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Progreso is the birthplace of Kika de la Garza, who served as a U.S. Representative for Texas's 15th congressional district for 32 years from 1965 to 1997. De la Garza was instrumental in agricultural policy and chaired the House Agriculture Committee, earning him the nickname 'Mr. Agriculture' for his work on farm bills and rural development programs that benefited South Texas.

DID YOU KNOW

Progreso sits directly on the U.S.-Mexico border and operates one of the busiest pedestrian border crossings in the Rio Grande Valley, with over 2 million crossings annually. The Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International Bridge is unique because it's one of the few places where you can literally walk from Texas to Mexico in under five minutes, making it a popular destination for medical and dental tourism.

CULTURAL

Every February, Progreso hosts the annual Citrus Fiesta, a tradition dating back to the 1930s that celebrates the region's agricultural heritage with a parade featuring floats decorated entirely with local citrus fruits. The festival includes traditional Mexican folk dancing, live mariachi music, and the crowning of the Citrus Queen, drawing thousands of visitors from both sides of the border to celebrate the community's bicultural identity.
