Who delivers electricity in Ira

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Ira. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Ira electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Ira’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Ira addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Ira today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

You have the power to choose your home’s energy company in Ira.

Compare Power is a free consumer service started in 2009 to help residents of Ira shop for their best energy plan.

These official rates are the same rates you’ll find calling the electricity companies or visiting their websites.

Competing plans from many different electricity companies are presented in a powerful grid that makes evaluating alternatives simple and quick.

This allows Texas energy customers to avoid hidden charges and marketing gimmicks by comparing plans “apples-to-apples” without spending hours and hours making phone calls or sorting through hundreds of different websites.

Electricity in Ira is deregulated. As an energy customer, you can choose when picking a retail electricity provider (your electricity company), which gives you control and power over your energy bill.

Deregulation of energy in the state de-monopolized the electricity market for most of Texas, the city of Ira included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many fantastic energy companies compete for your business in Ira by offering low rates, making it a great time to shop, switch, and lower costs on your energy bill.

As many as 60-100 energy companies compete for your account in Ira, with hundreds of plans to sort through.

How to find the best energy plan in Ira

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing how much electricity you will use each month is the ideal way to shop for power in Ira. Why does this matter?

The rate you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much power you consume each month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you enrolled.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for the power company.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to find your home’s ideal electricity rate plan.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in moments.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the energy plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the details, disclosing all charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then help you enroll with your chosen energy provider without leaving our website.

The takeaway here is you must determine your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate the average energy you will use in any given month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Ira: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Ira, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. The tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption by simply entering your zip code.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Ira

Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing electricity providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to contact your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you make the switch, your new energy company will handle everything for you, including canceling service with your previous provider.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Ira is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early from your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the lowest rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Ira electricity rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Ira was established in 1907 as a farming community along the Santa Fe Railroad line in western Scurry County. The town was named after Ira Wheat, a local landowner who donated land for the railroad depot and townsite, making it one of the few Texas towns named after a living person rather than a deceased hero or geographic feature.

RECENT

In 2018, Ira ISD made headlines by becoming one of the smallest school districts in Texas to implement a comprehensive one-to-one technology program, providing every student from kindergarten through 12th grade with their own tablet or laptop. This initiative was funded through a combination of state grants and local fundraising efforts, demonstrating the community's commitment to educational excellence despite its small size.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter and performer Red Steagall, who was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, spent part of his childhood in the Ira area during the 1940s. Steagall later became known as the 'Cowboy Poet of Texas' and was designated as the official Cowboy Poet of Texas by the state legislature, crediting his West Texas upbringing for inspiring his authentic cowboy songs and poetry.

DID YOU KNOW

Ira is home to one of the most unusual high school mascots in Texas - the Ira Bulldogs play their home football games on a field that sits at exactly 2,400 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest elevation football stadiums in the state. The thin air at this altitude actually affects the flight of footballs, causing kicks and passes to travel farther than at sea level, giving visiting teams an unexpected challenge when they come to play.

CULTURAL

Despite having a population of only around 250 people, Ira maintains its own independent school district and has never consolidated with neighboring districts, a point of fierce local pride. The community rallies around the school's athletic programs, particularly six-man football, where the entire town often travels to away games in a caravan of pickup trucks and RVs, creating a mobile cheering section that has become legendary in West Texas high school sports circles.
