Who delivers electricity in Hidalgo

AEP Central owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Hidalgo. Whichever plan you pick, AEP Central still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Hidalgo electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the AEP Central territory average 15.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 7.0¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

AEP Central is Hidalgo’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; AEP Central delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Hidalgo addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

Energy in Hidalgo is deregulated. As a resident, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your electricity provider), which gives you control and power over your energy bills.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the energy market for most of the state, the city of Hidalgo included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent power companies compete for your business in Hidalgo by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save money on your power statement.

As many as 100+ providers compete for your account in Hidalgo, with hundreds of plans to sort through.

How to find the best energy plan in Hidalgo

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Determining how much energy you will consume each month is the ideal way to find a deal on energy in Hidalgo. Why is this important?

The rate you see power providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different calculation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will change according to how much power you consume in the month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you saw when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to select your power rate.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing rates by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your home.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to discover your home’s ideal energy rate plan.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in moments.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of offers to guide you step-by-step to the energy rate plan that’s best for your household’s consumption.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then help you enroll with your chosen energy provider without ever leaving our service.

The bottom line is you must understand your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12 months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Hidalgo: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Hidalgo, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home to get the best rate.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain a usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Hidalgo

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is important to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous company.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Hidalgo is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest rate.

You will want to gather your historical usage for the past 12 months to determine your household’s best plan with the lowest rate.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Hidalgo was founded in 1852 and named after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Mexican priest who launched Mexico's independence movement in 1810. The city served as a crucial crossing point on the Rio Grande, with the original Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge built in 1926, making it one of the oldest border crossings between Texas and Mexico.

RECENT

In 2019, Hidalgo completed construction of a new $8.5 million port of entry facility that significantly expanded its capacity to handle commercial and passenger traffic between the United States and Mexico. The modernized facility processes over 2 million pedestrian crossings and 500,000 vehicle crossings annually, making it a vital economic gateway for the Rio Grande Valley.

OTHER

FAMOUS PEOPLE/EVENTS: Hidalgo gained international attention when it served as a primary filming location for the 2004 Disney movie 'The Alamo' starring Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton. The production built an elaborate replica of the Alamo mission on a ranch just outside the city, bringing Hollywood stars and crews to this small border town for several months of filming.

DID YOU KNOW

Hidalgo is home to the World Birding Center's Quinta Mazatlan, a 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival mansion that was once a private estate and is now haunted according to local legend. The mansion's former owner, Jason Matthews, reportedly still roams the halls, and paranormal investigators have documented unexplained phenomena including mysterious footsteps and doors that open by themselves during birding tours.

CULTURAL

Every December, Hidalgo hosts the Festival of Lights, where the entire downtown area is transformed into a winter wonderland with over one million Christmas lights synchronized to music. This tradition began in 1995 when the city wanted to create a unique holiday attraction that would draw visitors from both sides of the border, and it now attracts over 100,000 visitors annually who come to experience this magical display just steps from Mexico.
