Who delivers electricity in Hext

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Hext. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Hext electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Hext’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Hext addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Hext today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Hext, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

You have the power to choose your household’s electric company in Hext.

Compare Power is a free consumer service started in 2009 to assist residents of Hext in searching for their best electricity plan.

These official rates are the identical rates you’ll find calling the energy providers or visiting their websites.

Offers from many different electricity providers are displayed in a standardized grid that makes comparing your options simple and fast.

This assists Texas energy customers in avoiding hidden fees and advertising gimmicks by comparing plans “apples-to-apples” without consuming hours and hours making phone calls or navigating dozens of different online sites.

Energy in Hext has been deregulated. As an energy customer, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your electricity company), which gives you flexibility and power over your energy bill.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the energy market for most of the state, the city of Hext included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many excellent retail electricity providers compete for your business in Hext by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your electricity statement.

As many as 100+ providers compete for your account in Hext, with hundreds of plans to sort through.

How to find the best energy plan in Hext

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing how much energy you will use monthly is the ideal way to find a deal on energy in Hext. Why does this matter?

You see energy companies advertising the “price per kWh” for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much electricity you use each month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you enrolled.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for a power rate.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the best rate for your home.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the ideal energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and guide you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then help you order your plan with your chosen electricity company without ever having to leave our service.

The takeaway here is you should determine your expected or historical usage before ordering the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate the average energy you will use in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Hext: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Hext, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain a usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Hext

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is important to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing electricity provider will normally raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you make the switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous provider.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Hext is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the best price.

You will want to gather your past usage for the last 12 months to determine your household’s best plan with the lowest rate.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Hext was established in the 1880s as a railroad stop along the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, serving as a crucial shipping point for wool and mohair from the surrounding ranches. The tiny community was named after early settler John Hext, who operated a general store and post office that became the social and economic center for scattered ranchers across this remote section of the Texas Hill Country.

RECENT

In 2019, Hext gained unexpected attention when a severe hailstorm produced softball-sized hail that damaged nearly every structure in the community, making national weather news. The resilient residents rebuilt their small community with help from neighboring towns, demonstrating the strong bonds that exist in rural Texas communities where everyone knows their neighbors.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

While Hext itself hasn't produced major celebrities, the area was frequented by famous Texas Ranger Captain Dan Roberts in the 1870s and 1880s during his campaigns against Comanche raids. Roberts later wrote about his experiences patrolling this frontier region, and his memoirs mention stopping at the early settlement that would become Hext for supplies and rest.

DID YOU KNOW

Hext is one of the smallest incorporated communities in Texas with its own ZIP code, serving a population that can literally fit in a single school bus. Despite having only about 57 residents, the community maintains its own post office and ZIP code (76855) because it serves as a mail hub for dozens of remote ranches scattered across hundreds of square miles of rugged Hill Country terrain.

CULTURAL

Hext embodies the classic Texas ranch community culture where neighbors may live 20 miles apart but still consider each other close friends. The community's annual gathering is an informal barbecue held at the old general store site, where three generations of ranching families share stories, trade cattle, and maintain the social connections that have sustained this remote outpost for over 140 years.
