Who delivers electricity in Fate

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Fate. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Fate electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Fate’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Fate addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Fate today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Fate, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

Plan information is presented in a user-friendly format that enables a quick and simple comparison of available plans and options.

Energy in Fate has been deregulated. As an energy customer, you have a choice when choosing a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you flexibility and power over your energy bill.

Deregulating electricity in Texas de-monopolized the electricity market for most of Texas, the city of Fate included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent retail electricity providers compete for your business in Fate by offering low prices, making it a great time to shop, switch, and lower costs on your electricity statement.

As many as 60-100 retail electricity providers compete for your account in Fate, with hundreds of plans to choose from.

How to find the best energy plan in Fate

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Determining the amount of electricity you will consume in a month is the best way to find a deal on electricity in Fate. Why does this matter?

The “price per kWh” you see electricity providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much power you consume each month.

Unless you match the advertised usage each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you signed up.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to select your electricity provider.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.

Better still, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the right electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in just seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers, and assist you step-by-step with the energy plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your selected electricity provider without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you must know your expected or historical usage before picking the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12 months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Fate: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Fate, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching electricity companies in Fate

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate yearly when your contract expires.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new electricity company will handle everything for you, including canceling service with your previous company.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Fate is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the truly best rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Fate was founded in 1888 when the St. Louis Southwestern Railway built through the area, and the town was named after Lafayette 'Fate' Brown, a local landowner who donated land for the railroad depot. The community grew around cotton farming and the railroad, serving as a shipping point for agricultural products throughout East Texas during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

RECENT

Between 2010 and 2020, Fate experienced explosive growth of over 180%, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas as Dallas-area families sought affordable housing and small-town charm. The city has invested heavily in infrastructure improvements and new parks to accommodate this rapid expansion while maintaining its community character.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music star and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson lived in nearby areas and performed at local venues around Fate during her early career. The city has also been home to several Dallas Cowboys players over the years who chose the quiet community for its proximity to team facilities while offering a peaceful retreat from city life.

DID YOU KNOW

Fate is home to one of Texas's most unusual municipal features - a city hall that was originally built as a bank in the 1920s and still contains the original vault, which now serves as the city's secure document storage. The building survived the Great Depression when many other local businesses failed, and locals joke that it's the most secure city hall in Texas.

CULTURAL

Every October, Fate hosts the annual 'Day of Fate' festival that celebrates the city's railroad heritage with a vintage train display, live bluegrass music, and a chili cook-off that draws visitors from across North Texas. The festival features a unique tradition where the mayor arrives by handcar on the old railway tracks, recreating how officials might have traveled to town in the 1890s.
