Who delivers electricity in Electra

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Electra. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Electra electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Electra’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Electra addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Electra today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Electra, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

You have the power to choose your home’s energy company in Electra.

Compare Power is a free consumer service established in 2009 to assist residents of Electra in searching for their best electricity plan.

These official rates are the identical rates you’ll find calling the energy companies or visiting their websites.

Plans from several different energy providers are shown in a convenient grid that makes evaluating alternatives simple and fast.

This assures Texas energy customers avoid hidden charges and marketing gimmicks by comparing plans “apples-to-apples” without wasting hours and hours calling different energy providers or clicking around on hundreds of different websites.

Energy in Electra has been deregulated. As an energy customer, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you control and power over your energy bills.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the electricity market for most of Texas, the city of Electra included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many excellent retail electricity providers compete for your business in Electra by offering low rates. This makes it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your power statement.

As many as 65+ retail electricity providers compete for your account in Electra, with hundreds of plans to sort through.

How to find the best energy plan in Electra

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Determining the amount of electricity you will consume month-to-month is the ideal way to find a deal on energy in Electra. Why is this important?

The “price per kWh” you see electricity companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much power you consume each month.

Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you enrolled.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to shop for energy rates.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your home.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to determine the perfect electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in just moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and navigating you step-by-step to the electricity plan that’s best for your household’s consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your chosen energy company without ever having to leave our website.

The takeaway here is you should determine your expected or historical usage before picking the right electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12 months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Electra: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Electra, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Electra

Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is important to shop for a lower rate yearly when your contract expires.

Your existing energy provider will normally raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy provider will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Electra is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee of breaking your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Electra was founded in 1907 and named after Electra Waggoner, the daughter of wealthy rancher W.T. Waggoner, who owned vast oil and cattle holdings in North Texas. The town was established as an oil boomtown when the Waggoner family discovered oil on their ranch, leading to one of the most significant oil discoveries in Texas history that helped establish the state's petroleum industry.

RECENT

In 2019, Electra completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings from the oil boom era, including the conversion of the old Electra Hotel into a community center and museum. The project has attracted new businesses and helped preserve the town's unique early 20th-century architecture while boosting local tourism.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Electra was the childhood home of Red Steagall, the official Cowboy Poet of Texas and a renowned country music singer-songwriter who has been inducted into the Western Music Hall of Fame. Steagall, who grew up on a ranch near Electra in the 1940s and 1950s, credits his North Texas roots for inspiring his authentic cowboy poetry and music that celebrates ranch life and Western heritage.

DID YOU KNOW

Electra is home to one of the oldest continuously operating oil wells in Texas, known as 'Electra Well No. 1,' which was drilled in 1911 and still produces oil today after more than 110 years. The well has produced over 500,000 barrels of oil during its lifetime and stands as a testament to the longevity of the North Texas oil fields that helped fuel America's early automotive age.

CULTURAL

Every October, Electra hosts the annual 'Electra Goat BBQ Cook-off,' a unique festival that celebrates the town's ranching heritage with a twist—competitors must cook goat meat instead of traditional beef or pork. The event draws pitmasters from across Texas and Oklahoma, and the winning recipes often feature traditional Mexican and German influences reflecting the area's diverse cultural heritage from early settlers and ranch workers.
