Who delivers electricity in Columbus

AEP Central owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Columbus. Whichever plan you pick, AEP Central still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes AEP Central delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Columbus electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the AEP Central territory average 15.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 7.0¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

AEP Central is Columbus’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; AEP Central delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Columbus addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Columbus today is 7.0¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

You have the power to choose your home’s energy company in Columbus.

Compare Power is a free consumer service started in 2009 to assist residents of Columbus in shopping for their best energy plan.

These official rates are the identical rates you’ll find calling the energy companies or visiting them online.

Offers from several different electricity companies are presented in a standardized format that makes evaluating alternatives simple and fast.

This helps Texas energy customers avoid hidden fees and advertising gimmicks by comparing plans “apples-to-apples” without wasting hours and hours making phone calls or clicking through dozens of different websites.

Energy in Columbus has been deregulated. As a resident, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you flexibility and power over your energy bills.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the energy market for most of Texas, including the city of Columbus, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent power companies compete for your business in Columbus by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your electricity statement.

As many as 60-100 providers compete for your account in Columbus, with hundreds of plans to select from.

How to find the best energy plan in Columbus

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Knowing the amount of electricity you will use monthly is the ideal way to find a deal on energy in Columbus. Why does this matter?

The rate you see electricity providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you use in the month.

Unless you match the advertised usage each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than what you saw when you enrolled.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to select your electricity rate.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to discover the perfect electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans, and navigate you step-by-step to the electricity plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in ordering your plan with your chosen energy company without ever having to leave our service.

The bottom line is you should understand your expected or historical usage before picking the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Columbus: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Columbus, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Columbus

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower price each year when your contract expires.

Your existing electricity company will typically raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy company will take care of everything for you, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Columbus is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early termination” fee. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Columbus was founded in 1823 by Stephen F. Austin's colonists and holds the distinction of being one of the oldest Anglo-American settlements in Texas. The town served as the first capital of the Republic of Texas for three months in 1836, and it was here that the first Congress of the Republic convened after Texas won its independence from Mexico.

RECENT

In 2021, Columbus completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along the courthouse square, including the conversion of the old Stafford Opera House into a modern community center. The $2.3 million project has attracted new businesses and helped preserve the town's 19th-century architectural heritage while boosting tourism.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Columbus is the birthplace of Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, known as the 'Dean of Texas Artists,' who painted iconic bluebonnet landscapes in the early 1900s. His son Julian Onderdonk continued the family tradition and became famous for his impressionist paintings of Texas wildflowers, with both artists' works now displayed in major museums across the state.

DID YOU KNOW

Columbus is home to the oldest water tower in Texas that's still in active use, built in 1883 and standing 165 feet tall. The tower was constructed entirely of cypress wood and iron bands, and remarkably, it has never needed major structural repairs despite surviving numerous hurricanes, tornadoes, and over 140 years of continuous operation.

CULTURAL

Every October, Columbus hosts the annual Magnolia Homes Tour, where visitors can explore some of the most beautiful antebellum and Victorian homes in Texas, many dating back to the 1850s. The town has preserved over 60 historic structures within a six-block area, earning it recognition as one of the best-preserved 19th-century courthouse squares in the state and making it a popular filming location for period movies.
