Yes — most Brownsville addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

How to find the best energy plan in Brownsville

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing the amount of energy you will consume each month is the ideal way to find a deal on power in Brownsville. Why is this so vital?

The rate you see power providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much electricity you use in the month.

Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to shop for a power rate.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing rates by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your home.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter and is the ideal way to find the perfect electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What could take you hours inside a spreadsheet is now solved in moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of offers and assisting you step-by-step with the electricity plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then assist you in signing up with your chosen electricity provider without leaving our website.

The bottom line is you must know your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Brownsville: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Brownsville, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain a usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching electricity companies in Brownsville

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract expires.

Your existing energy provider will generally raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing electricity providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything for you, including canceling service with your previous company.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Brownsville is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the best price.

You will want to find your past usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Brownsville was founded in 1848 by American entrepreneur Charles Stillman, who purchased land from the heirs of Spanish colonial land grants after the Mexican-American War. The city was named after Major Jacob Brown, who died defending Fort Texas during the war, making Brownsville one of the last battles of the conflict that established the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico.

RECENT

In 2019, SpaceX selected Boca Chica Beach near Brownsville as the site for its Starship development and launch facility, bringing international attention and significant economic investment to the area. The facility, known as Starbase, has conducted multiple test flights and is planned to be the launch site for future Mars missions, transforming Brownsville into a major player in commercial space exploration.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Brownsville is the birthplace of Kris Kristofferson, the legendary country music singer-songwriter and actor who wrote classics like 'Me and Bobby McGee' and starred in films like 'A Star is Born.' Born here in 1936, Kristofferson went on to become a Rhodes Scholar and Army helicopter pilot before achieving fame in Nashville and Hollywood.

DID YOU KNOW

Brownsville is home to the world's largest urban wildlife refuge, the Sabal Palm Sanctuary, which protects the last remaining grove of native Sabal palms in the United States. These ancient palms, some over 500 years old, are the same species that once covered much of South Texas but now exist only in this 557-acre preserve along the Rio Grande.

CULTURAL

Brownsville celebrates Charro Days every February, a four-day festival that began in 1938 as a way to promote friendship between the United States and Mexico during the Great Depression. The festival features elaborate costumes, parades, and cultural exchanges with sister city Matamoros, Mexico, just across the Rio Grande, making it one of the oldest international friendship festivals in North America.
