Who delivers electricity in Boyd

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Boyd. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Boyd electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Boyd’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Boyd addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Boyd today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to find the best energy plan in Boyd

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Knowing the amount of energy you will use in a month is the ideal way to shop for electricity in Boyd. Why is this so vital?

The “price per kWh” you see power companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much power you use each month.

Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to shop for an electricity company.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your household.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to determine the ideal electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and assisting you step-by-step with the energy plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then assist you in ordering your plan with your selected power provider without ever having to leave our website.

The bottom line is you should determine your expected or historical usage before choosing the best electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12-months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Boyd: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Boyd, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching electricity companies in Boyd

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract expires.

Your existing energy provider will typically raise your energy rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy provider will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Boyd is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early termination” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly lowest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Boyd was founded in 1893 when the Rock Island Railroad came through the area, and the town was named after Jep Boyd, a local landowner who donated land for the railroad depot. The community quickly grew from a simple railroad stop into a thriving agricultural center, serving as a shipping point for cotton, grain, and livestock from the surrounding Wise County farmland.

RECENT

In 2020, Boyd completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Main Street and added new sidewalks, period lighting, and landscaping. The project has attracted new businesses and helped preserve the town's small-town charm while accommodating growth from nearby Fort Worth's expanding suburbs.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Boyd was the childhood home of country music songwriter Red Lane, who wrote numerous hits for Merle Haggard including 'The Fugitive' and 'If We Make It Through December.' Lane grew up on a farm outside Boyd in the 1940s and often credited his rural Texas upbringing for inspiring his authentic country music storytelling style.

DID YOU KNOW

Boyd is home to one of the last remaining original Rock Island Railroad depots in North Texas, built in 1893 and still standing today. The depot served as the town's lifeline for over 70 years, and local legend says that during Prohibition, bootleggers used the depot's basement to hide illegal whiskey shipments bound for Fort Worth and Dallas.

CULTURAL

Every October, Boyd hosts the annual Cottonwood Festival, celebrating the massive cottonwood trees that line the town's historic Main Street, some of which are over 100 years old. The festival features live music, local crafts, and a unique 'Cottonwood Seed Toss' competition where participants try to catch the fluffy seeds as they fall from the towering trees, creating a magical snow-like atmosphere in the Texas heat.
