You have the power to choose your home’s electric company in Bloomington.

Compare Power is a free consumer service started in 2009 to help residents of Bloomington shop for their lowest rate electricity plan.

Plan information is presented in a user-friendly format that enables a quick and simple comparison of available plans and options.

Competing plans from several different energy companies are outlined in a standardized grid that makes comparing your options simple and quick.

This allows Texas consumers to avoid hidden fees and marketing gimmicks by comparing plans “apples-to-apples” without spending hours of time making phone calls or navigating hundreds of different online sites.

Energy in Bloomington is deregulated. As a resident, you have a choice when it comes to selecting a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you insight and command over your energy bill.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the electricity market for the majority of the state, the city of Bloomington included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent energy companies compete for your business in Bloomington by offering low prices, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save costs on your electricity bill.

As many as 60-100 retail electricity providers compete for your account in Bloomington and there are hundreds of plans to sort through.

How to find the best energy plan in Bloomington

#1 rule: Usage is king!

Determining how much energy you will consume in a month is the ideal way to find a deal on power in Bloomington. Why is this important?

The “price per kWh” you see power companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly bill is computed, and your monthly bill will change according to how much power you consume in a month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to pick your energy rate.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing rates by total monthly cost, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your household.

Better still, if you have an entire year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the right energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the energy rate plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges and fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then help you in enrolling with your selected energy provider without ever having to leave our website.

The takeaway here is you must understand your expected or historical usage before selecting the right electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12-months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Bloomington: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Bloomington, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or to possibly switch plans.

Switching electricity companies in Bloomington

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing electricity company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly higher than the plan you signed up.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract make sure to shop the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you make the switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything for you including canceling service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Bloomington is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days early of your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you are unsure email us your latest energy bill and one of our team members will get back to you promptly with your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the truly cheapest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Bloomington was founded in 1906 as a railroad town along the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway line that connected Victoria to the Gulf Coast. The town was named after Bloomington, Illinois, by railroad officials who wanted to attract Midwestern settlers to the fertile coastal plains of South Texas with a familiar name.

RECENT

In 2020, Bloomington completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings from the early 1900s railroad era. The project included converting the old railway depot into a community center and museum, bringing new life to the small town's historic Main Street corridor.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter Red Lane, who penned hits for Merle Haggard including 'The Fugitive' and 'If We Make It Through December,' was born and raised in Bloomington. Lane's songs earned multiple Grammy nominations and helped define the Bakersfield Sound of country music in the 1960s and 70s.

DID YOU KNOW

Bloomington sits on one of the largest underground freshwater reserves in Texas, part of the Gulf Coast Aquifer system that extends deep beneath the town. Local wells can tap into water that fell as rain over 10,000 years ago, making the town's water supply older than recorded human civilization in the Americas.

CULTURAL

Every October, Bloomington hosts the annual 'Rails and Tales Festival' that celebrates the town's railroad heritage with vintage train car displays, storytelling sessions about the old railway days, and traditional railroad worker meals. The festival draws visitors from across the coastal bend region who come to experience authentic small-town Texas railroad culture.
