Who delivers electricity in Austwell

AEP Central owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Austwell. As of August 2026, plans we offer in the AEP Central territory average 15.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 7.0¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Yes — most Austwell addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Austwell today is 7.0¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

Electricity in Austwell is deregulated. As a consumer of energy, you have a choice when it comes to selecting a retail electricity provider (your electricity provider), which gives you control and power over your energy bill.

Deregulation of electricity in the state de-monopolized the energy market for the majority of Texas, the city of Austwell included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many excellent retail electricity providers compete for your business in Austwell by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save costs on your energy bill.

As many as 65+ energy companies compete for your account in Austwell and there are hundreds of plans to select from.

How to find the best energy plan in Austwell

#1 rule: Usage is king!

Knowing how much electricity you will consume in a month is the ideal way to find a deal on electricity in Austwell. Why does this matter?

The rate you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you consume in the month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you enrolled.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to pick your energy provider.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing rates by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your home.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the right energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in just seconds.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers, and assist you step-by-step with the electricity rate plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees and charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your chosen energy provider without ever having to leave our service.

The takeaway here is you must know your expected or historical usage before choosing the best electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you are unable to acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Austwell: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Austwell, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Austwell

Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing electricity company will typically raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract make sure to check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you make the switch, your new energy provider will handle everything for you including terminating service with your previous company.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Austwell is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early of your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly best price.

You will want to find your historical usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Austwell was established in the 1890s as a cattle shipping point along the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway. The town's name comes from the combination of 'Austin' (honoring Stephen F. Austin) and 'well,' referring to the artesian wells that provided fresh water in this coastal prairie region, making it a vital stop for cattle drives heading to market.

RECENT

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated Austwell with storm surge and flooding, destroying most of the town's remaining structures and displacing nearly all residents. The community has been slowly rebuilding, with many former residents choosing to relocate permanently, making it one of the smallest incorporated towns in Texas with fewer than 200 people.

OTHER

FAMOUS PEOPLE/EVENTS: Austwell served as a filming location for several scenes in the 1956 movie 'Giant' starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean. The vast coastal prairie landscape around Austwell provided the perfect backdrop for the fictional Reata Ranch, and some of the town's historic buildings appeared in the film before being demolished decades later.

DID YOU KNOW

Austwell is home to one of the most important bird migration stopover points in North America, located within the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge corridor. Every winter, the area hosts the entire wild population of endangered whooping cranes—fewer than 500 birds—making this tiny town a critical sanctuary for one of the world's rarest bird species.

CULTURAL

Despite its tiny size, Austwell maintains its own post office and ZIP code (77950), making it one of the smallest communities in Texas to have this distinction. The town's economy has historically depended on ranching, oil and gas production, and serving as a gateway to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
