Who delivers electricity in Alvarado

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Alvarado. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Yes — most Alvarado addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Alvarado today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to find the best energy plan in Alvarado

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Knowing the amount of electricity you will use monthly is the best way to find a deal on energy in Alvarado. Why is this important?

The “price per kWh” you see electricity companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different calculation for how your monthly bill is computed, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much power you consume in a month.

Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you ordered.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to select your power plan.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by total monthly cost, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.

Better still, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the ideal electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now solved in a few moments.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers, and navigate you step-by-step to the energy plan that’s best for your household’s consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then help you enroll with your chosen power company without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you should know your expected or historical usage before selecting the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Alvarado: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Alvarado, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Alvarado

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate yearly when your contract expires.

Your existing energy company will generally raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new electricity provider will take care of everything for you, including terminating service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Alvarado is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early cancellation” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly lowest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Alvarado was founded in 1853 and named after Pedro de Alvarado, a Spanish conquistador who served under Hernán Cortés during the conquest of Mexico. The town became a major railroad junction in the 1880s when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway intersected here, making it a crucial transportation hub for North Texas cattle and cotton shipments.

RECENT

In 2020, Alvarado completed a major downtown revitalization project that transformed the historic town square area with new sidewalks, period lighting, and landscaping. The $2.3 million project also included the restoration of several 1890s-era buildings and the creation of a new community pavilion that hosts farmers markets and outdoor concerts throughout the year.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music star Pat Green, known as the 'King of Texas Country Music,' has strong ties to Alvarado and has performed multiple benefit concerts in the town square. Green's hit songs like 'Wave on Wave' and 'Three Days' helped define the Texas country music scene in the early 2000s, and he continues to support local charities and events in the Alvarado area.

DID YOU KNOW

Alvarado is home to one of the last remaining original Harvey House restaurants from the famous Fred Harvey chain that served railroad travelers across the American West. The restored 1902 Harvey House now serves as a museum and event center, complete with the original lunch counter where travelers once grabbed quick meals during train stops on their journey westward.

CULTURAL

Every October, Alvarado hosts the unique 'Pioneer Days Festival' where the entire downtown area transforms into an 1880s frontier town complete with period costumes, blacksmith demonstrations, and authentic chuck wagon cooking. Local residents spend months preparing authentic period clothing and learning traditional crafts, making it one of the most historically accurate frontier festivals in North Texas with over 10,000 visitors annually.
