Who delivers electricity in Alma

Oncor owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Alma. Whichever plan you pick, Oncor still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes Oncor delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Alma electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the Oncor territory average 15.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.8¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Oncor is Alma’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; Oncor delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Alma addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Alma today is 6.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Alma, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

Energy in Alma, Texas, has been deregulated. As a resident, you have a choice when it comes to choosing a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you control and power over your energy bill.

Deregulation of energy in the state de-monopolized the electricity market for the majority of the state, the city of Alma included, which introduced lots of competition.

As a result, many excellent retail electricity providers compete for your business in Alma by offering low-rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and save costs on your electricity bill.

As many as 100+ energy companies compete for your business in Alma and there are hundreds of plans to choose from.

How to find the best energy plan in Alma

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Discovering how much electricity you will consume monthly is the best way to find a deal on power in Alma. Why does this matter?

The “price per kWh” you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you use in the month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you observed when you signed up.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to pick your energy plan.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Even better, if you have an entire year of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to discover the right energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now done in just seconds.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers, and navigate you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees and charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then help you in ordering your plan with your chosen power provider without ever having to leave our service.

The bottom line is you must know your expected or historical usage before ordering the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you are unable to acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Alma: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Alma, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or to possibly switch plans.

Switching electricity companies in Alma

Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing electricity company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract make sure to shop the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you make the switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything for you including canceling service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Alma is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early termination” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you are unsure email us your latest energy bill and one of our team members will get back to you promptly with your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly cheapest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Alma was established in 1881 as a railroad town along the Houston and Texas Central Railroad line connecting Dallas to Houston. The town was named after Alma Brown, the daughter of a prominent local landowner who donated land for the railroad depot. During its early years, Alma served as a crucial shipping point for cotton and grain from surrounding Ellis County farms.

RECENT

In 2020, Alma completed a major infrastructure improvement project that upgraded its century-old water system with new pipes and a modern water treatment facility. The $2.3 million project was funded through a combination of state grants and municipal bonds, ensuring reliable water service for the next 50 years while maintaining the town's rural character.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter Red Lane, who penned hits for Merle Haggard including 'The Fugitive' and 'If We Make It Through December,' spent part of his childhood in Alma during the 1940s. Lane later became one of Nashville's most successful songwriters, with over 400 recorded songs to his credit. His connection to this small Texas town influenced many of his songs about rural life and working-class struggles.

DID YOU KNOW

Alma holds the unusual distinction of being one of the few Texas towns where the original 1881 railroad depot building still serves its original function as a transportation hub. The tiny wooden structure, measuring just 12 by 20 feet, continues to serve as a flag stop for freight trains, making it possibly the smallest active railroad facility in Texas. Train crews still use the original telegraph key mounted inside the depot.

CULTURAL

Every October, Alma hosts the 'Smallest Town Festival,' a tongue-in-cheek celebration of its tiny size that draws visitors from across North Texas. The festival features a 'World's Shortest Parade' that lasts exactly 3 minutes and covers just two city blocks, followed by a chili cook-off where everyone who enters automatically wins a prize. The event has become so popular that the town's population temporarily increases by 2000% during the festival weekend.
