How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Thompsons

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Discovering how much energy you will consume monthly is the ideal way to shop for electricity in Thompsons. Why should you care?

The rate electricity companies advertise for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much power you use in a month.

Unless you use precisely the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for power companies.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your home.

Better still, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the right electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and guiding you to the best electricity rate plan for your home’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your chosen power provider without ever having to leave our website.

The takeaway here is you should understand your expected or historical usage before ordering the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Thompsons: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Thompsons, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: You can estimate your monthly usage if you can’t obtain a usage history. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching Electricity Companies in Thompsons

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything, including terminating service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Thompsons is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an “early termination” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching providers may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the best price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Thompsons Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Thompsons was established in the 1890s as a railroad stop along the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, named after early settler William Thompson who donated land for the depot. The community served as a crucial shipping point for cotton and cattle from surrounding plantations and ranches, connecting rural Fort Bend County to major markets in Houston and Galveston during the post-Civil War economic recovery.

RECENT

In 2020, Thompsons became part of a major flood mitigation project when Fort Bend County completed construction of improved drainage systems and detention ponds following Hurricane Harvey's devastating impact in 2017. The $50 million infrastructure investment has significantly reduced flooding risks for the small community and surrounding agricultural areas.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music star Clay Walker, who has sold over 11 million albums and had numerous #1 hits including 'What's It to You' and 'Live Until I Die,' grew up on a ranch near Thompsons in the 1970s and 1980s. Walker often credits his rural Fort Bend County upbringing for inspiring his authentic country sound and connection to traditional Texas values.

DID YOU KNOW

Thompsons sits on land that was once part of the massive 97,000-acre Stafford Point plantation, one of the largest sugar cane operations in antebellum Texas. Archaeological surveys in the 1990s discovered remnants of the original sugar mill machinery buried beneath what is now Thompson Road, including a massive cast-iron grinding wheel that required eight oxen to operate.

CULTURAL

Despite having fewer than 1,200 residents, Thompsons maintains one of the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire departments in Fort Bend County, established in 1952. The annual Thompsons Fire Department BBQ Cook-off, held every October since 1978, draws over 3,000 visitors from across the Houston metro area and has raised more than $2 million for emergency equipment and community scholarships.
