Yes — most South Houston addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in South Houston

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Discovering how much energy you will use each month is the ideal way to find a deal on power in South Houston. Why is this so vital?

The rate you see energy providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much electricity you use each month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will pay a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to pick your energy plan.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the right energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step with the electricity plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in ordering your plan with your chosen power provider without ever having to leave our service.

The takeaway here is you should know your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to South Houston: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in South Houston, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via our “Help Me Choose” tool. The tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption by simply entering your zip code.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in South Houston

Switching is good. Market conditions constantly change, so you must shop for a lower price each year when your contract expires.

Your existing energy provider will typically raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you do not act, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to contact your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new energy company will handle everything, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in South Houston is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days before your contract’s end date without an “early termination” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee of breaking your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and want to find the best plan, remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the lowest price.

You will want to gather your past usage for the last 12 months to determine your household’s best plan with the lowest rate.

South Houston Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

South Houston was incorporated in 1913 as a planned industrial community by the South Houston Land Company, which envisioned it as a model city for oil refinery workers. The city was strategically located near the Houston Ship Channel and became home to major petrochemical facilities, establishing its identity as a blue-collar industrial town that would support Houston's growing energy sector.

RECENT

In 2020, South Houston completed a major downtown revitalization project that transformed the historic downtown area along Spencer Highway into a walkable district with new restaurants, shops, and community spaces. The $15 million investment included streetscape improvements, new sidewalks, and the restoration of several 1920s-era buildings that now house local businesses and art galleries.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music star George Jones lived in South Houston during his early career in the 1950s and often performed at local honky-tonk bars along Spencer Highway. The legendary singer, known as 'No Show Jones' for his unpredictable concert appearances, wrote some of his early hits while living in a small apartment above what is now a vintage clothing store in the downtown area.

DID YOU KNOW

South Houston is home to the oldest continuously operating drive-in movie theater in the Houston metropolitan area, the South Houston Drive-In, which opened in 1947. The theater survived Hurricane Harvey in 2017 when volunteers formed a human chain to move the vintage projection equipment to higher ground, and it still shows double features every weekend using the original 1940s speakers that hang on car windows.

CULTURAL

Every October, South Houston hosts the unique 'Día de los Muertos Car Show' that combines traditional Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations with lowrider car culture, reflecting the city's predominantly Hispanic population. The event features elaborately decorated altars alongside custom cars, mariachi bands, and traditional foods, creating a distinctive cultural fusion that has become a regional attraction drawing visitors from across Southeast Texas.
