Rising Star electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the AEP North territory average 16.1¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.6¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Yes — most Rising Star addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Rising Star today is 6.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Rising Star

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing how much electricity you will consume monthly is the ideal way to shop for energy in Rising Star. Why is this important?

The rate electricity companies advertise for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much power you consume each month.

Unless you match the advertised usage each month, you will pay a “price per kWh” different than what you saw when enrolling.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to choose your power plan.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Better yet, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to determine the perfect energy rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and navigating you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in ordering your plan with your selected energy company without leaving our service.

The takeaway here is you must know your expected or historical usage before choosing the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage or own a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Rising Star: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Rising Star, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in Rising Star

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so shopping for a lower rate every year when your contract expires is essential.

Your existing energy provider will raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you do not act, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new energy company will take care of everything for you, including canceling service with your previous company.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Rising Star is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days before your contract ends without an “early cancellation” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and want to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the lowest price.

You will want to find your historical usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Rising Star Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Rising Star was founded in 1880 when the Texas Central Railroad came through the area, and the town was named after a local store called the 'Rising Star Store' that served as the community's first commercial establishment. The railroad brought prosperity to this small farming community, making it a shipping point for cotton and cattle in eastern Eastland County during the late 1800s.

RECENT

In 2020, Rising Star completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Main Street and added new sidewalks and period lighting. The project was funded through a combination of state grants and local fundraising efforts, breathing new life into the small town's commercial district after decades of decline.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Rising Star was the childhood home of legendary country music songwriter Cindy Walker, who penned classics like 'You Don't Know Me' and 'Dream Baby' for artists including Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, and Jim Reeves. Walker, who was born in 1918, wrote over 400 songs during her career and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997, always crediting her small-town Texas upbringing for her storytelling ability.

DID YOU KNOW

Rising Star is home to one of the oldest continuously operating general stores in Texas, the Rising Star Trading Post, which has been serving the community since 1883. The store still operates with its original wooden floors and tin ceiling, and locals claim you can still buy everything from penny candy to farm equipment, just like customers did over 140 years ago.

CULTURAL

Every October, Rising Star hosts the annual 'Founder's Day Festival' which features a unique tradition called the 'Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off' where local farmers compete to grow the largest pumpkin in East Texas. The festival draws visitors from across the region and includes live music, craft vendors, and a barbecue cook-off, celebrating the town's agricultural heritage and tight-knit community spirit that has persevered for generations.
