Yes — most O'Brien addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in O'Brien today is 6.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in O’Brien

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Discovering how much electricity you will use monthly is the best way to shop for energy in O’Brien. Why should you care?

The rate you see power providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will change according to how much energy you use in the month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you saw when you enrolled.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to shop for a power company.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your home.

Better yet, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to determine the ideal energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the energy plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your chosen power provider without leaving our website.

The bottom line is you should know your expected or historical usage before ordering the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an electricity provider at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to O’Brien: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in O’Brien, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: You can estimate your monthly usage if you can’t obtain a usage history. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in O’Brien

Switching providers is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left with a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy.

  • You don’t have to contact your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity provider will take care of everything, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in O’Brien is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early from your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” penalty. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the lowest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

O’Brien Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

O'Brien was founded in 1906 as a railroad town along the Wichita Valley Railway line, named after railroad official Pat O'Brien who helped establish the depot. The town quickly became a shipping point for cotton and cattle from the surrounding ranches, with the railroad bringing prosperity to this remote corner of West Texas during the early 20th century boom.

RECENT

In 2020, O'Brien made headlines when it became one of the smallest incorporated cities in Texas to receive federal CARES Act funding, receiving over $30,000 despite having only 106 residents. The city used the funds to upgrade its water infrastructure and improve internet connectivity for remote learning during the pandemic.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter Red Lane, who penned hits like 'The World Needs a Melody' for Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty, spent part of his childhood in O'Brien during the 1940s. Lane went on to write over 400 songs and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, but always credited his small-town Texas roots for inspiring his storytelling style.

DID YOU KNOW

O'Brien holds the distinction of being one of the few Texas towns where the school district actually has more students than the city has residents, with approximately 120 students attending O'Brien ISD while only 106 people live within the city limits. This unusual situation occurs because the school district draws students from a much larger rural area spanning parts of three counties.

CULTURAL

Every October, O'Brien hosts the annual 'Pumpkin Days' festival, which draws visitors from across the Big Country region despite the town's tiny size. The festival features a pumpkin weigh-off, homemade pie contest, and live music, transforming the quiet farming community into a bustling celebration that can triple the town's population for a weekend.
