Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Mereta today is 6.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Mereta

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Discovering how much electricity you will use month-to-month is the ideal way to shop for energy in Mereta. Why is this so vital?

The “price per kWh” you see electricity providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will change according to how much power you use in a month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will pay an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to pick your power company.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to determine the perfect energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in a few seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and guide you step-by-step to the electricity plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your selected electricity company without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you must determine your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average energy in any given month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Mereta: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Mereta, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: You can estimate your monthly usage if you can’t obtain a usage history. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or switch plans.

Switching Electricity Companies in Mereta

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is important to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing electricity provider will typically raise your energy rate once your contract expires. If you do not act, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to call your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you decide to switch, your new electricity provider will take care of everything for you, including canceling service with your previous company.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Mereta is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early from your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the lowest rate.

You will want to gather your historical usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Mereta Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Mereta was established in 1909 as a railroad stop along the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, which was part of an ambitious plan to connect Kansas City to the Pacific Ocean through Mexico. The town was named after Mereta Tankersley, the daughter of a local rancher who donated land for the railroad depot, making it one of the few Texas towns named after a woman.

RECENT

In 2019, Mereta became part of a major wind energy corridor development in Tom Green County, with several large wind farms constructed within a 10-mile radius of the community. These projects brought significant lease revenue to local landowners and property tax benefits to the county, helping sustain the small rural community's economy.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter and performer Red Steagall, who was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, spent part of his childhood in the Mereta area during the 1940s. He later became famous for writing hits like 'Here We Go Again' recorded by Ray Charles and Nancy Sinatra, and served as the official Cowboy Poet of Texas.

DID YOU KNOW

Mereta is home to one of the last remaining original Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway water towers in Texas, built in 1910 to supply steam locomotives crossing the desert. The 40-foot wooden tower still stands today and is considered a rare surviving example of early 20th-century railroad infrastructure, though it hasn't been used since diesel locomotives replaced steam engines in the 1950s.

CULTURAL

Despite having a population of only about 150 people, Mereta maintains a strong community identity centered around its annual Labor Day celebration that has been held continuously since 1925. The event features traditional ranch rodeo competitions, barbecue cook-offs, and live country music, drawing visitors from across West Texas and serving as a reunion for former residents who have moved away but return each year to celebrate their roots.
