Who delivers electricity in Galveston

CenterPoint owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Galveston. Quick answers

Galveston electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the CenterPoint territory average 14.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 5.9¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

CenterPoint is Galveston’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; CenterPoint delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Galveston addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Galveston today is 5.9¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to find the best energy plan in Galveston

The key: Know the amount of energy you use!

Knowing the amount of energy you use each month is the only way to ensure you get the best electricity rates in Galveston. How does this help?

Energy providers advertise a “price per kWh” rate based on your monthly usage.

The calculation to determine your rate will be different depending on the plan or company that you choose to go with, but the biggest factor is the amount that you use each month.

If your usage does not match the amount a company bases its rates on, you will end up paying a different price and not getting the best deal.

Luckily for residents of Galveston, Compare Power provides a better way to shop.

If you have a 12-month usage history or know how much energy you will use each month, it will be very easy to compare competing plans and determine which one will meet your needs at the best price. Compare Power can instantly help you find the lowest electricity rate.

While you used to spend hours researching and talking to company representatives, Compare Power does all the research and calculations to ensure that you are getting the best rates for your household’s unique energy needs.

You can even get the lowdown on fees and other charges to know exactly what you’re paying for and never have to worry.

You can choose the best plan and get set up immediately on Compare Power. Remember that knowing your monthly usage is the #1 rule for finding the right plan!

You should estimate if you don’t know your exact usage.

While the best option is to find your 12-month historical usage, you may not have access to that information or may just be moving into a new house. If this is the case, you need to estimate your monthly usage.

While this may sound daunting, Compare Power makes it quite simple, and estimating is way better than picking a rate that doesn’t meet your usage needs.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Galveston: Setting up electricity

Known for Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Galveston is an island city off the coast of Southern Texas.

Galveston has a very temperate climate with mild winters and summers that are not too hot but have very high humidity. The city was incorporated in 1839 and has grown to be the home of over 50,000 people.

It is a great place for beachgoers, seafood lovers, and those looking to depart for a cruise or other sea adventure.

Spend your days at the Pleasure Pier or bird watching from numerous nature reserve areas or beaches.

Remember: If you’re moving to Galveston, you must try to get a 12-month usage report on your house from the previous owner to get the best rates.

Ask the previous owner to provide you with a recent billing statement. You can find the usage history without extensive research or calculating an estimate on those documents.

This may feel like a large inconvenience, but it will certainly pay off when you get your electricity bill each month.

Compare Power takes your usage and immediately does the math to find the best rates in Galveston.

Note: If you are having trouble determining your monthly usage, Compare Power’s convenient “Help Me Choose” tool below can help you get on the right track.

Start your new energy plan directly through Compare Power so you can get the best rates and even get a reminder when it is time to look again for a better rate.

Switching electricity companies in Galveston

With the fluctuating energy markets in Galveston, you must constantly reevaluate your plan and rates. Switching can be a great money-saver.

After your first contract year, most energy companies will assume that you are a loyal customer and will begin to raise your rates.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Don’t leap into renewing your contract. Look at Compare Power’s rates and see if switching could save you money each year.

Switching is simple:

After you switch, your current provider will be contacted by your new company, which will cancel your services.

In Galveston, electricity is all produced by the same utility company. This means that electricity will make it to your house regardless of your provider.

The energy companies you choose from all use the same infrastructure and equipment. No one will have to come and switch it out, and service can be seamlessly transitioned to your new provider.

In Texas, you can even terminate your current energy contract within two weeks of the end date. The law wants to protect consumers and makes sure that you don’t have to pay the early termination fee.

Even if your contract is still valid for the long term, the savings may make up for the fee you will pay when terminating your contract.

If you do not want to terminate your contract early, you can still switch to most electric providers and ask them to wait for 60 days before they contact your current company. This ensures that you lock in the rate you need and can wait for your contract to end.

Once again, remember that to find your best rate and switch now, you must know your usage. Either estimate or gather information on your historical 12-month usage.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Galveston was once known as the 'Wall Street of the South' and was the wealthiest city in Texas during the late 1800s, serving as the state's primary port and financial center. The city's golden age came to a devastating end on September 8, 1900, when the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history struck—a Category 4 hurricane that killed between 6,000 and 12,000 people and destroyed most of the city.

RECENT

In 2017, Galveston completed the $125 million Galveston Harbor Bridge replacement project, creating the tallest cable-stayed bridge in Texas at 177 feet high. The new bridge accommodates larger cruise ships and cargo vessels while providing stunning views of the Gulf Coast, significantly boosting the city's tourism and shipping industries.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Jazz legend Jack Johnson, the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, fought some of his most famous matches in Galveston in the early 1900s, though he was born in the city in 1878. The island was also home to Jean Lafitte, the famous pirate who used Galveston as his base of operations from 1817 to 1821, calling his settlement 'Campeche' and ruling it like a pirate kingdom.

DID YOU KNOW

Galveston is home to one of the largest and most well-preserved collections of Victorian architecture in the United States, with over 60 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city's East End Historic District contains more than 1,400 historic structures, many of which survived the 1900 hurricane and were painstakingly restored, creating what's essentially a living museum of 19th-century American architecture.

CULTURAL

Galveston hosts the third-largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, a tradition that actually predates New Orleans' famous celebration by several decades, having started in 1867. The island's unique 'Strand District' features 36 blocks of Victorian-era buildings that have been converted into shops, restaurants, and galleries, while the city maintains its reputation as the 'Playground of the Southwest' with attractions like the historic Pleasure Pier built over the Gulf of Mexico.
