Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

How to find the best energy plan in Childress

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Understanding your monthly electricity usage is ideal for finding a deal on electricity in Childress. Why is this so vital?

The rate you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly bill is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much power you use in the month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to choose your electricity plan.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing plans by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the best rate for you.

Better yet, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter and is the best way to find the right electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now done in seconds.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigating you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your monthly bill.

We help you sign up with your chosen power company without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you must know your expected or historical usage before selecting the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business and cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate the average energy you will use in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Childress: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Childress, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when renewing your existing plan or possibly switching plans.

Switching electricity companies in Childress

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so shopping for a lower rate every year when your contract expires is essential.

Your existing electricity provider will generally raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you make the switch, your new electricity company will take care of everything for you, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Childress is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the cheapest price.

You will want to find your historical usage for the last 12 months to determine your household’s best plan with the lowest rate.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Childress was founded in 1887 as a division point on the Fort Worth and Denver Railway, named after George Campbell Childress, the principal author of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The town's strategic location made it a crucial railroad hub connecting the Texas Panhandle to major markets, with massive rail yards that employed hundreds of workers and shaped the community's identity for over a century.

RECENT

In 2020, Childress completed construction of a new $12 million hospital facility, the Childress Regional Medical Center, replacing the aging facility that had served the community since the 1950s. The state-of-the-art medical center features advanced emergency services, surgical suites, and telemedicine capabilities, serving not just Childress but the entire surrounding rural region of Northwest Texas.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Childress is the hometown of Sammy Baugh, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history who played for the Washington Redskins from 1937-1952. Known as 'Slingin' Sammy,' he revolutionized the forward pass and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1963, with his jersey number 33 retired by Washington.

DID YOU KNOW

Childress is home to one of the last remaining original Harvey House restaurants, part of the famous chain that brought fine dining to railroad travelers across the American West in the early 1900s. The restored Harvey House now serves as a museum and event center, complete with the original lunch counter where travelers once dined on white tablecloth service while their trains refueled and took on water.

CULTURAL

Every October, Childress hosts the annual Old Settlers Reunion, a tradition that began in 1898 and claims to be one of the oldest continuous community celebrations in Texas. The four-day festival features a massive parade, carnival, barbecue cook-off, and the crowning of the Old Settlers Queen, drawing thousands of former residents back to their hometown and celebrating the area's ranching and railroad heritage.
