Who delivers electricity in Blackwell

AEP North owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Blackwell. Whichever plan you pick, AEP North still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes AEP North delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the AEP North territory average 16.1¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 6.6¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Yes — most Blackwell addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Blackwell today is 6.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

As many as 60-100 providers compete for your account in Blackwell and there are hundreds of plans to select from.

How to find the best energy plan in Blackwell

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Knowing how much energy you will use month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on energy in Blackwell. Why should you care?

The “price per kWh” you see energy providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different calculation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much energy you consume each month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you saw when you ordered.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to pick your energy provider.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing plans by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your household.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to find the perfect energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of offers and guide you step-by-step to the energy plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees and charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in signing up with your selected electricity provider without leaving our website.

The bottom line is you should determine your expected or historical usage before selecting the right electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12-months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Blackwell: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Blackwell, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Blackwell

Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is important to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract make sure to check the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything for you including canceling service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Blackwell is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early of your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you are unsure email us your latest energy bill and one of our team members will respond to you promptly with your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly lowest price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Blackwell was founded in 1900 as a railroad town along the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, which connected Kansas City to the Pacific Coast through Mexico. The town was named after A.J. Blackwell, a railroad official who helped establish the depot and water station that became the foundation of the community. The railroad brought cattle ranchers and farmers to the area, making it a vital shipping point for West Texas agricultural products.

RECENT

In 2018, Blackwell completed a major infrastructure improvement project that upgraded the city's water treatment facility and replaced aging water lines throughout the community. The $1.2 million project was funded through a combination of state grants and local bonds, ensuring reliable water service for residents and supporting the town's agricultural economy for decades to come.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Blackwell was the childhood home of country music songwriter Red Lane, who wrote numerous hit songs for Merle Haggard including 'The Fugitive' and 'I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink.' Lane grew up on a ranch outside Blackwell in the 1940s and often credited the wide-open spaces and cowboy culture of West Texas for inspiring his authentic country music lyrics.

DID YOU KNOW

Blackwell holds the unusual distinction of being one of the few Texas towns where the high school football team plays on a field that straddles two counties. The Blackwell Hornets' football field sits directly on the Nolan-Coke County line, meaning players can literally run from one county to another during a single play. This geographic quirk has made the field a popular curiosity for visitors and sports trivia enthusiasts.

CULTURAL

Every October, Blackwell hosts the annual Pumpkin Festival, which transforms the tiny town into a fall wonderland with over 10,000 pumpkins decorating Main Street and surrounding areas. Local farmers donate pumpkins from their fields, and residents compete in elaborate pumpkin carving contests, pumpkin pie baking competitions, and even pumpkin launching contests using homemade catapults. The festival draws visitors from across West Texas and has become the town's signature celebration.
