How to find the best energy plan in Big Lake

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing the amount of energy you will consume monthly is the best way to find a deal on power in Big Lake. Why is this important?

The rate you see electricity companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is calculated, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you consume in the month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to select your electricity plan.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly cost, is the best way to shop for the best rate for you.

Better yet, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to determine the ideal energy plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges and fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then assist you in enrolling with your chosen power provider without ever having to leave our website.

The takeaway here is you must determine your expected or historical usage before ordering the best energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12-months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Big Lake: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Big Lake, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12 months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching electricity companies in Big Lake

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing energy provider will normally raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly higher than the plan you signed up.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract make sure to check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything for you including canceling service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Big Lake is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early termination” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you are unsure email us your latest energy bill and one of our team members will respond to you promptly with your best options.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the truly best rate.

You will want to gather your past usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Big Lake was founded in 1911 as a railroad town along the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, but its destiny changed forever on May 28, 1923, when the Santa Rita No. 1 oil well came in as a gusher. This discovery launched the Permian Basin oil boom and transformed the University of Texas from a modest state school into one of the wealthiest universities in the world, as the well was drilled on university land that generated billions in royalties.

RECENT

In 2019, Big Lake completed construction of a new $8 million water treatment plant to handle the increased demand from oil field operations and population growth during the latest Permian Basin boom. The facility can process 2.5 million gallons per day and includes advanced filtration technology to ensure water quality meets growing industrial and residential needs in Reagan County.

OTHER

FAMOUS PEOPLE/EVENTS: Big Lake is the birthplace of Tex Ritter, the legendary country music singer and actor who became famous for singing the theme song to the 1952 movie 'High Noon' and starred in dozens of Western films. Ritter, born in 1905, went on to become a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and was the father of actor John Ritter of 'Three's Company' fame.

DID YOU KNOW

Big Lake's Santa Rita No. 1 oil well was drilled based on the advice of a rainmaker and fortune teller named Ira Yates, who convinced University of Texas officials to lease their 'worthless' West Texas land for oil exploration. The well was named after the Catholic patron saint of impossible causes, and when it struck oil, it generated so much wealth that UT's Permanent University Fund now exceeds $30 billion, making it one of the largest university endowments in the world.

OTHER

CULTURAL/UNIQUE: Big Lake hosts the annual Santa Rita Celebration each May to commemorate the famous oil discovery that changed Texas history. The three-day festival features live music, barbecue cook-offs, and historical reenactments of the 1923 oil strike, drawing visitors from across the Permian Basin. The original Santa Rita derrick has been preserved and moved to the UT campus in Austin, where it stands as a monument to the university's oil wealth.
