Who delivers electricity in Baytown

CenterPoint owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Baytown. Whichever plan you pick, CenterPoint still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Quick answers

Baytown electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the CenterPoint territory average 14.3¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 5.9¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

CenterPoint is Baytown’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; CenterPoint delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Baytown addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Baytown today is 5.9¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Baytown, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

Instantly compare competing Baytown electricity companies

The state legislature deregulated the market for electricity in Texas communities like Baytown in 2002. This policy change means that instead of a single provider, Waco residents choose from competing energy providers.

Deregulation helps consumers like you by encouraging energy providers to compete for your dollars rather than establish cookie-cutter rates. You can take advantage of this competition by using Compare Power to find quotes from up to 100 energy providers. Instead of looking through individual plans, you will see every plan offered by every provider through Compare Power’s search tool.

How to find the best energy plan in Baytown

#1 rule: Know your usage!

The first step in reducing your monthly energy bill is to know how much energy you use each month.

Energy companies don’t adjust their rate quotes to your estimated usage. Instead, they use a standard rate of about 2,000 kWh baseline for all of their quotes.

This works fine if that is your monthly usage but imagine the shocking revelation of a monthly bill based on a higher usage rate.

Compare Power simplifies matters by customizing energy quotes based on your actual usage rather than a baseline rate. Before using the search tool, you only need your zip code and monthly electric usage for the past year.

Once you input this data, Compare Power takes care of the rest. You will see quotes from energy providers serving Baytown that include taxes and additional fees. The site lets you set up your service with a new provider without going to another site. All you need to get started is your last year of energy usage.

Energy usage history document showing monthly consumption data with pen pointing to figures

If you don’t know your usage, take an educated guess

If you can’t acquire recent usage or are new to your current home, the next best thing is to determine how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as accurate as having your previous usage, estimating your typical usage is better than choosing a plan that doesn’t match your household’s energy needs.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Baytown: Setting up electricity

Baytown acts as a midway point between the hustle and bustle of Houston and the natural habitat of Galveston Bay. Residents can make their way to the city or coastal cities like Galveston by hopping on the freeway.

Sunset over flooded wetland with dead trees reflecting in still water

To save time for these trips, you can reduce time-consuming activities like searching for an energy plan.

Important: If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Baytown, you need to get the previous year’s energy usage for your home.

To get previous usage figures, ask the previous homeowner to check their billing statements for exact figures. You will save time and money by trying to piece this information together.

Once you have these numbers, Compare Power can start finding the right plan for your energy needs. If this info isn’t available, you can use an estimate of your monthly usage using the “Help Me Choose” tool. Compare Power reminds you to return and switch your plan at the end of your current contract.

Switching electricity companies in Baytown

Your electrical provider may take the end of your current energy contract as a chance to hike your rates.

This contract bump means that you should search for cheap electrical rates each year to take advantage of industry competition. You may save hundreds of dollars each year by switching accounts.

Switching contracts is easy because your new provider handles everything, including cancellation. As you switch, you don’t need to worry about representatives coming to your home or disrupting your power. The switch only takes minutes, and you could realize savings in the first month.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Baytown is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility rather than your provider.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Baytown was founded in 1948 through the merger of three separate communities: Baytown, Pelly, and Goose Creek. The area's history dates back to 1916 when Humble Oil Company (now ExxonMobil) established one of the world's largest oil refineries here, transforming the region from rural farmland into a major petrochemical hub that would define the Texas Gulf Coast industrial corridor.

RECENT

In 2019, ExxonMobil announced a $20 billion expansion of its Baytown complex, the largest investment in the company's history. The project, completed in phases through 2022, increased the facility's capacity to produce plastics and other petrochemicals, solidifying Baytown's position as a global center for chemical manufacturing and creating thousands of high-paying jobs.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music star George Jones, known as 'The Possum' and considered one of the greatest country singers of all time, lived in Baytown during his early career in the 1950s. He performed at local honky-tonks and recorded some of his first songs while residing here, before moving to Nashville where he became a Grand Ole Opry legend with hits like 'He Stopped Loving Her Today.'

DID YOU KNOW

Baytown is home to the world's largest bayou-to-bay nature preserve within city limits, the Baytown Nature Center, which sits on a 450-acre peninsula that was actually built from dredged material from the Houston Ship Channel. The center features alligators, over 300 bird species, and hiking trails, all constructed on what was essentially man-made land created from shipping channel maintenance.

CULTURAL

Every October, Baytown hosts the Baytown Seafood Festival, which has grown into one of Texas's largest seafood celebrations, attracting over 150,000 visitors annually. The festival showcases the city's unique position between Houston's urban culture and the Gulf Coast's maritime heritage, featuring everything from crawfish eating contests to live Cajun music, celebrating the area's role as a gateway between land and sea.
