Who delivers electricity in West Columbia

TNMP owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in West Columbia. Whichever plan you pick, TNMP still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes TNMP delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the TNMP territory average 16.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 8.2¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Yes — most West Columbia addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in West Columbia today is 8.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the electricity market for most of Texas, the city of West Columbia included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many fantastic energy companies compete for your business in West Columbia by offering low rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your energy statement.

As many as 65+ energy companies compete for your business in West Columbia, and hundreds of plans exist to sort through.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in West Columbia

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Determining how much energy you will consume monthly is the ideal way to shop for power in West Columbia. Why is this so vital?

The “price per kWh” you see electricity companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much power you use in a month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to select your energy company.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for your home.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to determine the ideal electricity plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you in an instant. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in just moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and guiding you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that’s best for your household’s consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then assist you in signing up with your selected power company without leaving our website.

The bottom line is you must understand your expected or historical usage before selecting the best electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to West Columbia: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up an electricity service in West Columbia, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home to get the best rate.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or possibly switch plans.

Switching Electricity Companies in West Columbia

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you do not act, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to contact your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity company will handle everything, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in West Columbia is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the best price.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

West Columbia Electricity Rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

West Columbia holds the distinction of being the first capital of the Republic of Texas, serving from 1836 to 1837 after Texas won independence from Mexico. The first Congress of the Republic of Texas met here in a small wooden building, and it was here that Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first elected President of Texas on October 22, 1836. The town's brief but crucial role in Texas history earned it the nickname 'First Capital of Texas.'

RECENT

In 2020, West Columbia completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along the Brazos River waterfront. The $2.3 million project included the creation of a new riverwalk, restoration of the 1925 Ammon Underwood House, and development of a heritage tourism trail that connects key historical sites throughout the small city.

OTHER

FAMOUS PEOPLE/EVENTS: West Columbia was the birthplace of Elisabet Ney, the renowned 19th-century sculptor who created statues of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin that now stand in the U.S. Capitol. The town also hosted the famous Runaway Scrape during the Texas Revolution, when thousands of Texan settlers fled eastward through West Columbia ahead of Santa Anna's advancing Mexican army in 1836.

DID YOU KNOW

West Columbia is home to the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, which was once owned by James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas. The plantation house contains a secret room that was used during the Civil War to hide valuables from Union troops, and archaeological excavations have revealed that the property was also the site of one of the first successful oil wells in Texas, drilled in 1918.

CULTURAL

Every October, West Columbia hosts the Republic of Texas Chilympiad, a unique chili cook-off that celebrates both the town's status as the first capital and Texas's love of chili. The event features contestants dressed in period costumes from the 1830s, and the winning chili recipe is ceremonially 'signed into law' by someone portraying President Sam Houston. The festival has grown from a small local event to attract thousands of visitors who come to experience this quirky blend of history and culinary competition.
