Yes — most Johntown addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Johntown today is 8.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to find the best energy plan in Johntown

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing how much energy you will use month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on power in Johntown. Why does this matter?

You see power providers advertising the “price per kWh” for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly statement is calculated, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much energy you use in the month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you enrolled.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to choose your electricity plan.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the right energy rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step with the energy plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.

We then help you order your plan with your selected electricity provider without leaving our service.

The takeaway here is you should determine your expected or historical usage before ordering the right electricity plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Johntown: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Johntown, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain a usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

By signing up for a plan through Compare Power, you will receive automated reminders when renewing your existing plan or possibly switching plans.

Switching electricity companies in Johntown

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is important to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing electricity company will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don’t have to contact your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your power supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you decide to switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything for you, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Johntown is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can pick any date up to 14 days early from your current contract’s end date without an “early termination” fee. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the cheapest rate.

You will want to find your past usage for the last 12 months to determine your household’s best plan with the lowest rate.

Johntown electricity rates FAQs

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Johntown was established in 1872 as a railroad stop along the International and Great Northern Railroad line connecting Palestine to Longview. The town was named after John Henderson, a prominent local landowner who donated the land for the railroad depot and surrounding townsite, making it one of the earliest planned communities in Henderson County.

RECENT

In 2020, Johntown completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings from the 1890s along Main Street. The $2.3 million project, funded through state historic preservation grants, transformed the old mercantile building into a community center and museum showcasing the town's railroad heritage.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter and producer Billy Sherrill, who penned hits like 'Stand By Your Man' for Tammy Wynette and produced numerous chart-toppers for George Jones, was born and raised in Johntown in the 1930s. Sherrill's childhood home on Elm Street still stands and features a historical marker commemorating his contributions to Nashville's music industry.

DID YOU KNOW

Johntown is home to the world's largest collection of antique railroad lanterns, housed in the restored 1889 depot building that now serves as a museum. The collection includes over 3,000 lanterns from railroads across North America, including several rare examples used on the Underground Railroad to signal safe passage for escaped slaves traveling through East Texas.

CULTURAL

Every October, Johntown hosts the annual 'Rails and Tales Festival,' where residents dress in period costumes and reenact the town's founding era with authentic steam locomotive demonstrations. The three-day festival features blacksmith demonstrations, old-time fiddle contests, and storytelling sessions held in the original railroad cars that have been converted into performance venues, drawing visitors from across the region.
