TNMP owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Hico. Whichever plan you pick, TNMP still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Hico electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the TNMP territory average 16.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 8.2¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

Yes — most Hico addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Hico today is 8.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

How to find the best energy plan in Hico

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Knowing the amount of electricity you will use month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on power in Hico. Why is this so vital?

The rate you see energy providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different calculation for how your monthly bill is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much power you use in the month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for an electricity provider.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing rates with the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your household.

Better still, if you have a year of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter and is the ideal way to discover the perfect energy rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in a few moments.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of offers to assist you step-by-step with the energy rate plan that’s best for your household’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then help you sign up with your selected energy company without leaving our website.

The takeaway here is you must determine your expected or historical usage before choosing the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12 months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Hico: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Hico, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you can’t obtain a usage history, you can estimate your monthly usage instead. Utilize our “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and we’ll help you evaluate your home’s usage.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Hico

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate each year when your contract expires.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy company will handle everything for you, including canceling service with your previous provider.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Hico is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early termination” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching providers may outweigh the fee of breaking your existing contract.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the lowest price.

You will want to find your past usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Hico was founded in 1856 and became famous for its claim that the legendary outlaw Billy the Kid didn't die in New Mexico as history records, but instead lived out his days peacefully in Hico under the name Ollie 'Brushy Bill' Roberts. Local resident Brushy Bill Roberts claimed until his death in 1950 that he was the real Billy the Kid, and the town embraced this legend, building a museum and annual festival around the controversial claim.

RECENT

In 2018, Hico completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along the town square and attracted new boutique shops and restaurants. The project has helped transform Hico into a popular weekend destination for antique hunters and tourists, with the town now hosting over 40 antique and specialty shops in its compact downtown area.

OTHER

FAMOUS PEOPLE/EVENTS: Hico hosts the annual Billy the Kid Museum and Old Fiddlers Reunion, which draws thousands of visitors each October to celebrate both the town's outlaw legend and its musical heritage. The event features live bluegrass and country music performances, along with exhibits about Brushy Bill Roberts and his claims to being the famous outlaw who allegedly faked his death in 1881.

DID YOU KNOW

Hico is officially recognized as the birthplace of the Dr Pepper soft drink, with a museum dedicated to the beverage's creation by pharmacist Charles Alderton in the 1880s. The town's old corner drug store, where Dr Pepper was first served, has been preserved as a museum and soda fountain where visitors can still order the original formula Dr Pepper made with pure cane sugar instead of corn syrup.

CULTURAL

Hico has earned the nickname 'A Small Town with a Big Heart' and maintains one of Texas's most well-preserved Victorian-era downtown squares. The entire downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town has strict preservation ordinances that require new businesses to maintain the authentic 1890s architectural character, creating a genuine Old West atmosphere that attracts film crews and tourists alike.
