Who delivers electricity in Covington

TNMP owns and maintains the poles, wires, and meters in Covington. Whichever plan you pick, TNMP still delivers the power and restores outages — switching providers never changes your wires. Every price on this page already includes TNMP delivery charges. If a rate elsewhere looks lower, check whether delivery is in it yet.

Quick answers

Covington electricity questions, answered

As of August 2026, plans we offer in the TNMP territory average 16.6¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh of monthly use, and today’s lowest effective rate is 8.2¢. Advertised rates move with your usage, so price plans at your own numbers.

TNMP is Covington’s transmission and delivery utility. It owns the wires and meters and restores outages. You choose your retail electricity provider; TNMP delivers no matter who you pick.

Yes — most Covington addresses have smart meters, so orders placed by 5 p.m. on a business day can start the same day. Pick your start date at checkout, up to 90 days ahead.

Compare effective rates at YOUR usage, not advertised rates — fees and bill credits bend each plan differently. Check the contract length and cancellation fee, then confirm delivery charges are included. The tables on this page do all three, and checkout takes about ten minutes.

Yes. Texas law gives you a 14-day window before your contract end date to switch with NO early-termination fee. Find your end date on your bill, then shop it today — the expensive move is drifting onto a holdover rate.

It changes with your usage. The lowest effective rate we price in Covington today is 8.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh — but a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh can lose at 2,000. Enter your ZIP and usage to see which company is cheapest for your home.

We currently price 122 plans in Covington, every one from a PUCT-licensed provider we work with, priced with delivery included.

Compare Power is a free consumer service started in 2009 to help residents of Covington shop for their best electricity plan.

These official rates are the identical rates you’ll find contacting the electricity providers or visiting their websites.

Electricity in Covington has been deregulated. As an energy consumer, you can choose a retail electricity provider (your electricity provider), which gives you insight and control over your energy bills.

Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the electricity market for most of the state, the city of Covington included, which introduced massive competition.

As a result, many excellent power companies compete for your business in Covington by offering low prices, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your electricity bill.

As many as 100+ retail electricity providers compete for your business in Covington, and hundreds of plans are available.

How to find the best energy plan in Covington

#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!

Discovering how much energy you will consume monthly is the best way to shop for electricity in Covington. Why does this matter?

The rate you see electricity providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much power you consume in a month.

Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to choose your power rate.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for you.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to determine the right electricity rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What could take you hours inside a spreadsheet is now solved quickly.

We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step with the energy rate plan that’s best for your home’s usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your monthly bill.

We then help you sign up with your chosen energy company without ever having to leave our website.

The bottom line is you must understand your expected or historical usage before selecting the right energy plan for your home.

If you don’t know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.

Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for your**specific usage.

Moving to Covington: Setting up electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Covington, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool can assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it’s time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching electricity companies in Covington

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is about to expire.

Your existing energy provider will typically raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Electric plug on hundred dollar bills with utility bill showing balance and electric charges

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

When you decide to switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything for you, including canceling service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Covington is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your current contract’s end date without an “early termination” penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.

Did You Know?

HISTORICAL

Covington was established in 1881 when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built through Hill County, creating a vital shipping point for local cotton farmers. The town was named after Leonard Covington, a War of 1812 general, and quickly became a hub for the region's agricultural economy with cotton gins and grain elevators serving the surrounding farming communities.

RECENT

In 2020, Covington completed a major infrastructure improvement project that upgraded the city's water treatment facility and replaced aging water lines throughout the downtown area. This $1.2 million project, funded through state grants and local bonds, ensures reliable water service for the next 30 years and has attracted new residential development to the area.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music songwriter and performer Red Steagall, known for penning hits like 'Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music' and 'Here We Go Again,' spent part of his childhood in the Covington area. Steagall later became the official Cowboy Poet of Texas and was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, always crediting his Hill County roots for inspiring his authentic Western songwriting style.

DID YOU KNOW

Covington is home to one of the last remaining original Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad depots in Hill County, built in 1882 and still standing today. The depot served as the town's lifeline to the outside world for over 70 years, and local legend claims that notorious outlaw Sam Bass once hid in the depot's freight room while evading Texas Rangers in 1878, three years before the building was even constructed.

CULTURAL

Every October, Covington hosts the annual 'Cotton Days Festival' that celebrates the town's agricultural heritage with antique tractor displays, cotton picking demonstrations, and traditional quilting exhibitions. The festival draws visitors from across Hill County who come to experience authentic rural Texas culture, including live bluegrass music and a famous cornbread cook-off that has been running for over 25 years.
